How to help your child excel in English at school

Whilst many parents believe that all the education should be left to the school but this isn’t necessarily true. A lot of people don’t actually enjoy school and learning about all these subjects in the classroom setting can have a negative impact on the way we view the subjects.

By engaging with classroom subjects outside of school, you may be able to help them both enjoy the classes more and in turn, do better in them. Here are some techniques to try:

    1. Let them see you writing

What better way to encourage your child to do well than to give it a go yourself! If your child is learning poetry at school, why not write some poetry together?

    1. Gift them the appropriate gifts

Everyone loves stationary. If you want to encourage your child to write more, buy them a nice notebook and pen. If you want them to read more, give them some good books and help them figure out what genre they enjoy most.

    1. Engage

Talk through their ideas and help them discover a voice. If they ask for help with spelling and punctuation etc. be helpful and teach them, as they may not feel confident enough to speak up and ask for help in class.

    1. Talk

Help your child with their language skills be engaging in conversation. Go places and see things, then talk about what you’ve both seen, heard, smelled, tasted, and touched. Good talkers are good writers.

    1. Take classes together

If your child seems to be enjoying learning outside of school with you, try going to a class or workshop together.

You could set up your own classes, find some really fun resources to pin up around the house.
