5 of the most sought after qualities in care workers

Care workers provide an important service and to do the job well there are a number of qualities you’ll need to exhibit. If you’re considering a career in social care, it may well be that you personify these sought after traits:

    1. Patient

Patience is certainly a virtue when it comes to care work. Being patient will help both the person you’re caring for and you as the carer, from becoming frustrated. Patience allows you to support a person without a tense atmosphere being created; this is particularly so when an everyday task someone once found easy is now difficult. Patience also comes to the fore given the repetitive nature of the tasks involved in someone’s personal and social care. You’re more likely to exude an aura of calm if you are patient, even when you’re feeling under pressure. So, you’ll be able to carry out your work to the same high standards, whatever is going on around you.

    1. Flexible

One of the key qualities recruiters look for in care workers is an ability to be flexible. When working as a carer, no two days are the same, which is part of the joy of the job, but it can also be a challenge. You won’t know what each new day will bring, and you’ll need to be able to adapt to the circumstances you find. You’re likely to be working with a range of clients with differing needs, and those needs may change from day-to-day; so you’ll need to be flexible. You’ll be able to adapt to changing circumstances.

    1. Organised

When working as a carer, it’s imperative that you’re organised. You may be juggling the requirements of a number of clients in different places. So, you’ll need to be organised with regards to your time keeping, prioritising your workload, and ensuring you have everything you need, when you need it most, so you don’t let your clients down.

    1. Responsible

It goes without saying that when working as a care giver, you need to be responsible. People will be trusting you with their care; you may be entering their home each day and helping them with the most intimate of tasks – so being responsible is a must.

    1. Good communicator

Working in social care also necessitates having good interpersonal skills, so you can communicate well with your clients and your colleagues too, building up a good rapport. You’ll be meeting people from all walks of life, with a variety of requirements and you’ll need to be able to communicate well with them all. Through your day-to-day work, you’ll be importing vital information, addressing concerns, providing reassurance, listening and responding to your clients and their family. So being a good communicator is essential.
