Helping Children Understand the Importance of Dental Proper Dental Care

There are so many aspects of parenting that can be challenging. There are so many things that you need to teach them that you hope become important things they value. For me it’s extremely important to help my children develop proper routines around their health. Things like thoroughly washing their hands after they use the restroom and before they eat, being more careful and selective about the foods they consume, and other important personal hygiene practices. When it comes to developing good dental care habits, it can be a challenge but this blog contains a few helpful suggestions that may help.

    Help them understand why

Everyone knows the age when the child starts asking the famous question, “Why?” after pretty much every request. It’s easy to become impatient and to simply respond with, “I’m Mom [or Dad] and I asked you to. That’s why.” However, these moments can lead to great teaching opportunities if properly handled. Take the time to explain that brushing their teeth is a great way to make sure they avoid tooth aches and keeps their teeth healthy. All the education in the world will not guarantee they will internalize the importance but take every chance to at least try.

Help them understand the consequences for not

I’m definitely not advocating for scare tactics. It’s like other types of care, wearing a coat when it’s cold outside is important because it helps prevent colds and other illnesses. Helping them understand toothaches and other consequences of not properly caring for our teeth can help solidify the importance in their minds.

    Make it a game

Dentists understand the importance of helping parents teach their children to properly caring for their teeth. It’s a challenge. That’s why the dentists at Hawley Lane Dental have built a brushing chart. The chart has places that can be marked off as children brush daily. I recommend having a fun incentive at the end of the month to help the children become excited about brushing their teeth.

    Get a fun toothbrush

There are toothbrushes of all sorts of cartoon characters and superheroes. Find your child’s favorite. This is a fairly simple, silly suggestion but for some children it’s a step that makes the routine become fun.

    Keep trying!

Sometimes children develop an opposition to brushing their teeth. Don’t give up! Be persistent in helping them understand the importance of properly caring for their dental health. Helping them develop these good habits young will increase the likelihood they do so later.

You’ve got this parents! You can help your children learn good healthy habits. Taking good care of their bodies will help prevent issues that may arise later. You’ll be glad that you did and they will as well, toothaches and other pains are no fun for anyone.
